What you'll be doing
The NSLHD Nursing and Midwifery Workforce will be compassionate, competent, confident, contemporary, capable and committed to leading person-centred health care.
NSLHD Prevention and Response to Violence Abuse & Neglect (PARVAN) Sexual Assault Service (SAS) provides a 24/7 integrated psychosocial, medical & forensic service to adults, young people & children who present following concern about sexual assault (SA).
The Forensic Nurse Examiner (FNE) role’s primary purpose is to provide advanced clinical leadership, advice and recommendations on all aspects of forensic nursing & service planning. It will play a leadership role in the establishment of the first state-wide clinical placement program for trainee SAS examiners.
The FNE will utilize their knowledge, experience & skills to deliver specialist integrated clinical care, medical & forensic examinations to people, aged ≥ 14 years, following a recent SA., They will participate in a 24/7 on-call roster as part of the PARVAN SAS team. They are a role model, responsible for the provision of clinical supervision to nursing staff and expert clinical consultancy on matters relating to the safe and appropriate use of nursing practices. They will develop educational resources for clients, colleagues and stakeholders & undertake ongoing analyses of current practice & the impact of new directions on the PARVAN SAS.
The FNE plays a central role in clinical & strategic leadership, & will contribute to the development, initiation, implementation & evaluation of strategic changes and primary responsibility for annual plans for the service & developing specialist clinical education. They contribute to state & national specialist clinical groups, drive collaborative research efforts & contribute to SA nursing education.
The FNE is expected to follow protocols established by the NSW Ministry of Health as outlined in PD202020_006 Responding to Sexual Assault (Adult and Child) Policy and Procedures. They will work in partnership with colleagues, other NSW Health staff, NSW Police, & the judicial system to ensure the provision of quality and culturally safe integrated health care, forensic documentation & evidence collection for patients presenting with concerns of SA. They may develop and provide integrated medical & forensic care for various groups, aligning with the Violence, Abuse and Neglect (VAN) Health system reforms at both service & specialty levels including assisting in the management of children < 13 & victims of Domestic and Family Violence (DFV).

Candidates will need to meet the following criteria:
- Current nursing registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia and 7 years full time equivalent post registration experience, with at least 5 years full time equivalent experience in the specialty field.
- Holds approved postgraduate qualifications relevant to the specialty or such other qualifications or experience deemed appropriate. Completed the NSW Health Education Centre Against Violence Graduate Certificate in the Medical and Forensic Management of Adult Sexual Assault (or equivalent).
- Demonstrated extensive clinical experience and expertise in clinical and forensic examinations of sexual assault victim-survivors and an ability to take part in 24/7 on call crisis roster.
- Demonstrated clinical leadership skills including staff supervision and mentoring; participation in state/ national/ international specialist clinical groups; knowledge of best practice and contemporary clinical practice advances and a commitment to excellence in nursing practice.
- Demonstrated experience in designing and implementing education for clients, services and the broader workforce and involvement in conducting research programs and providing clinical advice and consultancy.
