Where you'll be working
The MHICU is a specialist 12-bed tertiary referral unit with a focus on high quality evidence-based intensive care management of mental health consumers. This exciting role offers the successful applicant the opportunity to work in a low conflict, high therapy model of care with a low staff to consumer ratio. The position requires strong leadership skills and team work with a focus on recovery orientated practice. The successful applicant will demonstrate excellent risk management and conflict resolution skills. Specialist training in the prevention and management of violence and aggression will be provided. A strong leadership group of clinical nurse specialists will also be available for ongoing mentorship and support.


You will be joining a service where team work is a priority. You will have the opportunity to work with an experienced and dynamic recovery-orientated team focusing on complex and challenging mental health consumers. Clinical supervision is supported and protected time available to participate in clinical supervision, educational activities and quality improvement projects. You will have the opportunity to engage with other mental health specialties on campus including child and adolescent community & In-patient mental health services, adult community and In-patient mental health services, and Specialist Mental Health Services for Older Persons (SMHSOP) services.


What you'll be doing

The purpose of the Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) position is to provide senior nursing clinical leadership in the development of specialist clinical practice and service delivery within a nursing unit, team or service.

The CNS employs advanced clinical skills and exercises extended autonomy of decision making working closely with managers and other senior clinicians.

Candidates will need to meet the following criteria:

  • Consistently demonstrates behaviours that reinforce the CORE Values of our organisation; Collaboration, Openness, Respect and Empowerment. Demonstrates these behaviours with all stakeholders; colleagues, direct reports, as well as our patients and consumers, and those that care for them.
  • Current registration as a Registered Nurse with the Australian Nurse Health Practitioner Regulation Authority (AHPRA) with relevant post-registration qualifications and at least 3 years' experience working in the clinical area of their specified post-graduate qualification.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and ability to mentor and coach nursing staff to enhance professional development.
  • Demonstrated experience in leading and initiating activities to improve clinical service delivery and patient clinical outcomes.
  • Demonstrated skills in computer use and applications such as Windows, word processing and database.
  • Demonstrated ability to work individually and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Demonstrated experience or equivalent, managing acute complex and challenging clinical behaviours within a consumer centred, recovery focused framework.
