Are you currently enrolled to complete your Bachelor of Midwifery and seeking to gain experience as an Assistant in Midwifery (AIM)? Then come and join our friendly, expert team of midwives in NSLHD. We are seeking enthusiastic, proactive AIM's to join our team at RNSH Maternity Services. This is an excellent opportunity for currently enrolled Bachelor of Midwifery students, who have completed a minimum of the first year Spring semester clinical placement. The AIM position has the benefit  to enhance learning and continue to develop your clinical skills, providing more access, and therefore more experience in the clinical environment.

Where you'll be working

  • Royal North Shore Hospital (RNSH) and Community Health Service is a 634 bed principal tertiary referral centre. It is close to the CBD and transport facilities, accommodation, recreational and childcare facilities are available. Specialities include: Surgery, Medicine, Women’s & Children’s Health, Critical Care Services - ED State Trauma Centre, Operating Theatres, ICU General, Neurology/Neuroscience and Cardiology. State referral for Burns/Plastics, Neonatal Intensive Care, Interventional Neuroradiology and Acute Spinal Cord Injuries. RNSH has a commitment to person centred care, supporting our staff in developing their skills with Clinical Nurse Educators available in all units.
  • RNSH Midwifery- low to high risk maternity services, opportunity to work in outpatients, inpatient, birth unit and midwifery support program
  • The Hornsby and Ku-ring-gai Health Service (HKHS) incorporates a 295 bed, major metropolitan hospital providing a comprehensive range of secondary level services, outpatient services, six community health centres and ten early childhood centres. There are a large range of departments and services in both acute care and community settings. These include acute Medical & Surgical wards, large operating suite department, Medical Assessment Unit (MAU), Rehabilitation, Maternity and Paediatric wards, Emergency & Intensive care Departments.
  • Maternity – HKHS maternity Service is level 4 health facility providing antenatal, birthing and postnatal care .We offer a 14 bedded maternity unit with a special care nursery on site as well. We incorporate programs such as Towards Normal Birth and a Midwifery Group Practice Team. We offer specialised educational support to all staff as well.


What you'll be doing

Assess, plan, implement and evaluate nursing care in collaboration with individual/s and the greater health care team to achieve quality patient care outcome.

The NSLHD Nursing and Midwifery Workforce will be compassionate, competent, confident, contemporary, capable and committed to leading person-centred health care.

To provide quality woman centred, effective, evidenced based midwifery care in accordance with the ANMC National Competency Standards for the Midwife (2006) and to supervise the work of others as required.

The AIM will consult and liaise with the midwife, obstetric, medical and other appropriate staff under the supervision of a Registered Midwife, and is responsible for: provision of family centred antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal care; provision of an optimal level of woman centred care; provision of optimum level of care to the newborn; provision of uncomplicated lactation support consistent with working towards the (WHO) Baby Friendly Initiative (BFI) and escalating concerns to the midwifery team where appropriate.

Candidates will need to meet the following criteria:

  1. Please indicate if you are currently studying a Bachelor of Midwifery and have completed 12 months or more of an undergraduate Midwifery degree.
  2. Please indicate where you have completed acute clinical placements as a part of your undergraduate midwifery degree.
  3. Please demonstrate how you communicate effectively with both written and verbal communication skills and incorporating your effective interpersonal skills.
  4. Please indicate your facility preference.
