About this role
The Nursing and Midwifery Council of NSW (NMC) is offering an opportunity for two existing or emerging leaders in nursing and midwifery to participate in a paid leadership development program for three months (the Regulation in Leadership Program / “the Program”). The overarching Program aim is to develop a deeper understanding of the regulation of nurses and midwives in NSW.
Program participants will work at the NMC’s office at 477 Pitt Street, Haymarket and engage in a wide range of regulatory activities as described below. On occasions they may attend stakeholder engagement activities or visits to organisations other than the Council.
Start date: Monday 1 September 2025 - End date: Friday 28 November 2025

Must (1) be currently employed as a nurse or midwife and (2) be approved by their employer for a 3-month secondment for the program dates as outlined (Salary is funded by the Nursing and Midwifery Council. The successful applicant is responsible for travel and accommodation or otherwise seek employer support if available).
NM/MM Grade 3, salary from $ 139,661.16 - $ 142,254.44 per annum plus super and leave loading

What you'll be doing
• Learning about the professional practice framework and the legal framework for managing complaints in NSW
• Reviewing cases being managed in the health, performance and conduct pathways
• Attending, observing and supporting regulatory hearings, committees, panels and assessments
• Attending and contributing to Council governance meetings
• Developing a plan, for implementation after the program, to support and influence the use and adherence to professional standards therefore promoting safe practice within your employing health service
• Undertaking regulatory work such as:
o Assessing risk related to complaints
o Reviewing briefs and reports for committees and panels
o Providing professional advice
• Collaborating with staff regarding communications with stakeholders: practitioners, complainants, employers, supervisors, case managers and other regulators.
About you
This opportunity is best suited to leaders and managers in nursing and midwifery:
• whose current role includes responsibility for areas including: practice development, professional development, management of concerns about the practice of nurses/midwives; and
• who can demonstrate an interest in how regulation works to keep the public safe within their context of practice.
We are seeking motivated individuals who have the following qualifications, skills and experience:
• Currently employed registered nurses (Div 1) or midwives with Principal Place of Practice in NSW and general registration (not subject to conditions, restrictions, reprimand or caution) with:
o More than 5-years recent nursing / midwifery practice
o Experience in managing and / or developing teams
o Demonstrated interest in regulation, leadership, practice development, professional standards and patient safety
o Knowledge of professional standards including NMBA Codes of Conduct, Ethics and Standards for Practice for nurses and midwives
o Ability to critically analyse and solve problems
o Ability to work collaboratively towards shared goals
o Ability to write fluently and persuasively in a range of formats, providing complex information concisely to diverse audiences
o Previous experience working on quality / improvement projects
