What you'll be doing

The successful candidate will be responsible for providing contemporary comprehensive specialist care for ICU/HDU patients in collaboration with co-admitting VMOs. They will be required to teach and support junior doctors in the unit and the wider hospital. They will be expected to liaise closely with patients and families. They will also be expected to take part in quality and safety processes in the hospital and to take part in research undertaken in the unit.

Port Macquarie Base Hospital Level 5 ICU is a combined ICU/HDU and comprises 10 beds. Usual casemix includes a range of medical and surgical adult patients but can involve occasional paediatric admissions awaiting transfer to a specialist paediatric ICU.

Specialist intensivists contracted at the facility have a range of skills including anaesthesia, emergency medicine, general medicine and echocardiography.


This is a Category A position. Recommended applicants will be reviewed for compliance with NSW Health policy directive for Category A positions prior to offer.

Salary will be accordance with NSW Health State Awards for the advertised classification/s.  These awards are available at https://www.health.nsw.gov.au/careers/conditions/pages/default.aspx.


Selection Criteria 

  1. Eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia as a Specialist Intensive Care Physician, and/or overseas trained specialist via the appropriate International Medical Graduate pathway.
  2. Fellowship of the College of Intensive Care Medicine of Australia and New Zealand (FCICM) and/or equivalent specialist recognition.
  3. Demonstrated recent clinical experience in Intensive Care Medicine at the role delineation of the service.
  4. Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team and provide leadership of a team.
  5. Demonstrated effective clinical communication through the use of information technology and written, verbal and interpersonal skills.
  6. Demonstrated commitment to teaching, continuing education, research and quality improvement.
  7. Availability to participate in an on-call roster and to respond on site within a reasonable time.
