What you'll be doing
The Rural Generalist Nurse Practitioner/Transitional Nurse Practitioner (NP/TNP) is a site-specific model providing high levels of clinically focused care across a range of services: emergency, inpatient, residential aged care, palliative and community care.

The NP/TNP will:
  • provide holistic care to a broad range of acute and chronic presentations across the lifespan to address patient, resident and community needs.
  • receive and make referrals to facilitate integrated care across disciplines or teams and contribute to clinical excellence through research, teaching, consulting and providing leadership to the nursing profession.
  • work autonomously and collaboratively in an advanced and extended nursing clinical role, meeting the clinical demand within their defined and agreed scope of practice and formulary, including patients with chronic and complex care.
  • provide expertise in chronic and complex health conditions and support the development of best practice emergency / inpatient care plans and coordination of discharge plans for identified high risk patients with chronic and/or complex medical diagnosis that present to Dorrigo MPS.
  • provide expertise to the assessment and management of chronic & complex health conditions for the 21 residents of ‘Highview’ (RAC) within a wellbeing, resident directed model of aged care.
  • create culturally safe partnerships to address priority population groups within the Dorrigo plateau community including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, people living with a disability, people experiencing homelessness or on low incomes, older people and culturally and linguistically diverse groups
  • coordinate health care activity and referral to, and liaison with, internal and external community agencies and services relevant to their conditions
The NP/TNP role is grounded in the nursing profession’s values, knowledge, theories and practices and provides innovative and flexible health care delivery that complements other health care providers. 

The scope of practice of the nurse practitioner is determined by the context in which the nurse practitioner is authorised to practice. 


Salary will be accordance with NSW Health State Awards for the advertised classification/s.  These awards are available at http://www.health.nsw.gov.au/careers/conditions/pages/default.aspx.

  1. Current registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia and current practicing certificate to practice as a Nurse Practitioner or working towards endorsement as a Nurse Practitioner with the ability to complete all requirements within 2 years.
  2. Evidence of existing advanced practice skills and the ability to critically evaluate and integrate relevant research findings into decision making about health care management and interventions.
  3. Excellent leadership and interpersonal skills with proven ability to use appropriate teaching/learning strategies to educate and support others within the specialty and the profession.
  4. Demonstrated ability to articulate sound reasoning behind clinical, diagnostic and prescribing decisions that are informed by evidence-based practice and made within a nursing context.
  5. Demonstrated high level of capability in carrying out a range of advanced procedures, treatments and interventions that are evidence based and informed by specialist knowledge.
  6. Demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional and educational development of others, with a commitment to own professional development and currency of practice.
  7. Current NSW driver's licence and ability and willingness to travel for work purposes.
