About Your Role
The primary purpose of the Clinical Nurse Specialist Grade 2 – Violence, Abuse and Neglect (CNS – VAN) role is to provide medical and forensic responses and health care (within scope of practice) to people who have experienced violence, abuse and neglect.
This includes providing integrated crisis responses, non-acute clinical care, case coordination, follow up medical care and health care navigation.
The CNS – VAN will either be qualified as or eligible to become a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner. They will:
- be registered as a nurse with the Nurses and Midwifery Board
- have a minimum three years of clinical nursing experience in a relevant clinical specialty such as sexual health or women’s health.
- have obtained, be working towards, or be enrolled within 6 months of commencing the role, the Education Centre Against Violence (ECAV) Graduate Certificate in Medical and Forensic Management of Adult Sexual Assault (or equivalent).
The primary responsibility of the CNS is to use their expert clinical nursing knowledge and skills to provide high quality, integrated medical and forensic immediate responses to sexual assault and follow up support.
Integrated Prevention and Response to Violence, Abuse and Neglect Framework and other relevant NSW Health policy directives (e.g. Responding to Sexual Assault (adult and child) Policy and Procedures ). They will also be required to participate in developing and providing integrated medical and forensic care for other cohorts, in line with Violence, Abuse and Neglect system reforms. This includes clinical service provision for victims-survivors of domestic and family violence; and exploring expansion of scope of practice to provide responses to children aged 13 and younger who have experienced sexual assault and other forms of child abuse and neglect.
The CNS has advanced practice responsibilities and will contribute to the development of MLHD Sexual Assault Service’s clinical practice; mentor staff; and develop their professional skills by participating in training and/or professional networks. The CNS is also responsible for providing education and advice on caring for victim-survivors of VAN to other clinicians in MLHD.
The CNS will be required to participate in the 24/7 on-call roster, regular team meetings, quality improvement activities, administrative tasks, and research and education delivery as appropriate. The CNS will work in partnership with Priority Population’s Program colleagues, other NSW Health staff, NSW Police and the judicial system to ensure the provision of culturally safe, integrated health care, forensic documentation and evidence collection for patients who have experienced VAN.
