About Your Role

The Aboriginal Maternal Infant Health Service (AMIHS) Registered Midwife will work in partnership with Aboriginal women and families using a women centred approach to give them the necessary, cultural support, care and advice during pregnancy, labour, birth and the postpartum period. This includes being able to identify complications and seek timely referral or consultation to the appropriate health care provider.

The AMIHS Midwife will work in partnership with the AMIHS Aboriginal Health Worker to provide antenatal and postnatal care through to eight weeks for Aboriginal women and women whose babies identify as Aboriginal as per the AMIHS Service Delivery Model.

The AMIHS Midwife will have a commitment to a woman-centred approach working in partnership with the woman and her family to ensure consumer participation in decision making about care and the delivery of midwifery care.

The AMIHS Midwife will need to demonstrate continuous quality improvement with the ability to comprehensively conduct assessments; develop a plan for midwifery practice; provide safe, appropriate and responsive quality midwifery practice; and evaluates outcomes to inform midwifery practice.

The AMIHS Midwife will have competencies in and/or knowledge of the complexities and challenges involved in caring for Aboriginal women and their families during pregnancy, labour, birth and the postpartum period and the to engage in collaboration with internal and external stakeholders, and the ability to work within a multidisciplinary team in a rural health setting.
