Key skills required 
1. Understanding of public health, epidemiology, microbiology/virology and diagnostic techniques.
2. Excellent data management skills, e.g. proficient in Excel and other Microsoft applications, with knowledge of SAS, Stata and R advantageous.
3. Clear communicator who actively listens to others and responds with understanding and respect.
4. Adept at thinking, analysing and considering the broader context to developing practical solutions.
5. Able to manage self and deliver results by completing work tasks to agreed timeframes and standards, seeking specialist advice when required.
6. Able to monitor and act on compliance with information and communication security to organisational standards. 
7. Able to write and prepare material that is well structured and easy to follow.


Key accountabilities of the role 

  • Coordinate COVID-19 testing and reporting in non-clinical settings, particularly mandatory testing of returned travellers in hotel quarantine and suspected cases on maritime vessels and in aged care facilities.
  • Assist with organising specialised COVID-19 testing as part of a public health investigation, e.g. serology and viral culture.
  • Provide updates to guidelines and other communications to public and private laboratories.
  • Provide expert advice on interpretation of diagnostic test results to inform public health action.
  • Monitor, investigate and report on issues that may impact on the ability of laboratories to perform diagnostic testing.
  • Provide advice on appropriate laboratory tests to inform case and close contact management.
  • Develop operating procedures and guidelines related to COVID-19 testing and result interpretation.
  • Organise expert panels for the review of COVID-19 diagnoses.
  • Respond to queries on laboratory testing and reporting.
  • Assist with establishing pop-up collection sites in response to outbreak hotspots.
  • Assist with organising samples for whole genome sequencing and with interpretation of analyses to inform outbreak investigations.


Key challenges 

  • Balancing changing priorities within tight timeframes in a high pressured, fast paced environment while understanding and maintaining highly confidential Health data.
  • Identifying correct escalation points across a broad range of enquiries and stakeholders.
  • Providing the required level of support to others working in pressured environments.


Things to consider when expressing interest:

  • This is a temporary full time position for a period up to 6-months with the possibility to extend. Successful candidates are expected to start as soon as possible
  • Weekend and/or evening work may be required.  Such arrangement will be negotiated if weekend and/or evening work is required

Are you currently a NSW Government employee?

  • Current NSW Health, NSW Ministry of Health and NSW Government staff, must have their manager’s approval prior to expressing interest.
  • This will be an off-payroll arrangement for current Public Sector staff, your agency can invoice NSW Health for salary expenses.
  • The Lab Liaison Team works on a shift work arrangement, you will be required to amend your working conditions to accommodate shift working.
