Sydney Local Health District is seeking a highly motivated Provisional Fellow to join the Neurology Department at Concord Hospital with a focus on Neuromuscular Medicine
What you will be doing:
This position is open to experienced Neurology trainees.
As the Neuromuscular Fellow you will practice under the supervision and direction of Specialist Neurologists to assess and medically manage patients with neuromuscular and (peripheral) neuroimmunological diseases. You will be critical to the assessment, investigation, diagnosis and treatment of in and outpatients with neuromuscular and neuroimmunological disorders, while developing your skills in clinical neurophysiology. Specifically, you will have the opportunity to acquire Level 2/3 accreditation in clinical neurophysiological techniques such as nerve conduction studies, electromyography and evoked potentials. You will be trained in the use of Botulinum toxin therapy. You also have the opportunity to gain experience in the use of novel/research based neurophysiological techniques (eg repetitive stimulation transcranial magnetic stimulation).
In addition, clinical practice may involve the provision of basic genetic counselling, multidisciplinary care (eg. with rehabilitation, immunology, genetics and respiratory) and complex immunosuppression for myasthenia gravis, CIDP and systemic autoimmune diseases. An opportunity also exists to develop skills in the management of central neuroimmunological disorders such as multiple sclerosis. You will participate in a 1:4 oncall roster and act as first oncall for emergency department and afterhours calls.
The specific objectives of this clinical training position are to enable you to:
• Experience the wide range and presentations of neuromuscular and neuroimmunological disorders
• Develop experience in the assessment of neurogenetic disorders affecting the neuromuscular system
• Understand the role of MDT care of neuromuscular disorders
• Understand the rationale, mechanisms and outcomes of immunomodulatory medications including monoclonal antibody therapies and combination therapies for the treatment of neuromuscular diseases
• Appreciate risks and side effects and strategies for risk management.
• Complete a research project of your choice during the year.
The position is full time 38 hours per week with additional on call commitment.
The Neuromuscular Clinic
The Neuromuscular clinic at Concord Hospital is a long established tertiary referral service covering a range of congenital/inherited muscle (e.g., Duchenne’s, Becker’s, Myotonic dystrophy, FSHD) and nerve diseases (e.g., CIDP, Hereditary neuropathy). The clinic is led by Dr Katrina Morris and Prof Steve Vucic. Neurology core trainees also attend the clinic.
The Neuroimmunology Clinic
The Neuroimmunology clinic at Concord Hospital is a vibrant clinical collaboration between the Neurology and Immunology Departments. It has a particular focus on the management of patients requiring complex immunosuppression, including myasthenia gravis, CIDP and systemic autoimmune diseases as well as MS needing 2nd generation therapies. The clinic is led by A/Prof Stephen Reddel (Neurology) and A/Prof Sean Riminton (HoD, Immunology), and includes Prof Steve Vucic (Neurology), A/Prof Todd Hardy (Neurology) and A/Prof Sudarshini Ramanathan (Neurology). Advanced trainees in neurology and immunology also attend, as do nurses from neuroimmunology and immunology.
The Motor Neuron Disease Clinic
The MND clinic at Concord Hospital is led by Professor Steve Vucic and focusses on the diagnosis and management of all MND phenotypes. the service is tightly linked to research activities and clinical trial participation through Prof Vucic's research laboratory.
The Inherited Neuropathy/Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) Clinic
The CMT clinic builds on Concord Hospital's longstanding reputation in the management of patients with inherited neuropathy. In addition, patients are included into ongoing genetic research studies based on the campus.
