What you'll be doing

The Clinical Nurse Consultant provides expert clinical advice to patients/clients, carers and other health care professionals with complex healthcare needs within Cancer Services.  The Clinical Nurse Consultant is a clinical expert who, through leadership, facilitates excellence in research based clinical practice, education, research and professional leadership. The Clinical Nurse Consultant models the CORE (Collaboration, Openness, Respect and Empowerment) values of the organisation.

The McGrath Foundation’s mission is to ensure every family in Australia experiencing breast cancer has access to a Breast Care Nurse no matter where they live or their financial situation. Every day, the Australian community supports the McGrath Foundation by making donations, hosting or attending community events, or purchasing a pink product in our name. With the help of the Australian public, the Federal Government, our generous Corporate Friends and our supportive Foundation Friends, the McGrath Foundation continues to work tirelessly to ensure there is a Breast Care Nurse to support every Australian family experiencing breast cancer.
A Breast Care Nurse is defined by the National Breast and Ovarian Cancer Centre as a “registered nurse who applies advanced knowledge of the health needs, preferences and circumstances of women with breast cancer to optimise the individual’s health and well-being at various phases across the continuum of care, including diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation, follow-up and palliative care. This advanced knowledge is based on an in-depth understanding of theory and research relevant to the field of breast cancer nursing. Specifically, BCN practice incorporates advanced knowledge and skills in supportive care, including providing specialized and tailored information and education, psychological support, and clinical care”.

The Breast Care Nurse adapts his/her practice according to the specific and changing needs of individual women, taking into account their multiple health needs, concerns and preferences for care. The Breast Care Nurse facilitates continuity of care between different phases of the cancer journey, care settings, care plans and care providers.

The McGrath Breast Care Nurse will: Provide specialised breast care, information, education and support to clients relating to breast cancer in accordance with evidence based clinical practice guidelines. Collaborate with members of the multidisciplinary treatment team and relevant community service providers to coordinate the delivery of client-oriented, specialised support services across the care continuum, to clients and their families. Provide expert clinical advice and clinical leadership on evidence based breast care services to nursing staff, allied health and other members of the multidisciplinary team (or to health care providers a woman with breast cancer may come into contact with).
The McGrath Breast Care Nurse’s specific responsibilities can be classified according to seven key functions;
Application of Advanced Breast Cancer Knowledge and Skills, Promotion of Multidisciplinary Care, Facilitation of Client-Focused Support and Treatment, Provision of Client-Specific Information, Commitment to Maintenance of Professional Standards, Act as a Breast Cancer Resource, Keep reporting up to date.

Positions Vacant:

  • McGrath Metastatic Breast Care Nurse, Clinical Nurse Consultant, Grade 2 - Temporary part time 24 hours per week position until 25 June 2023 with the possibility of extension subject to funding. This position will be based at Shoalhaven Cancer Care Centre
  • McGrath Breast Care Nurse, Clinical Nurse Consultant, Grade 2 - Permanent part time 32 hours per week position. This position will be based at Illawarra Cancer Care Centre
 

An eligibility list will be created for future Temporary and Permanent Part-Time positions.

 

Please note: Employment of a temporary visa holder may only occur if no suitable permanent resident or citizen of Australia has been identified for this position following suitable labour market testing.

Selection Criteria:

  1. Registered nurse with a current licence to practice from the Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency (AHPRA) and current NSW Driver’s License (if required by service).
  2. Minimum five years full time equivalent post registration experience, in surgical or medical oncology, with at least three years full time equivalent experience in the specialty field of Breast Care or related discipline. Post graduate qualifications relevant to the field of practice- Breast and /or Cancer Nursing (minimum first unit of the post graduate certificate with willingness if deemed necessary to complete the post graduate certificate in breast care nursing).
  3. Proven clinical leadership skills and an ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary framework with a demonstrated commitment to excellence in nursing practice.
  4. Demonstrated effective communication and inter-personal skills across a variety of mediums and an understanding of the practice development framework.
  5. Proven ability to implement changes and develop direction in clinical practice by the utilisation of evidence based research.
  6. Demonstrated skills in strategic and clinical service planning including an understanding of organisational behaviour, change management and cultural change processes.
  7. Demonstrated skills in clinical teaching, competency in the use of contemporary information systems and experience in the development of specialty education programs.
  8. Demonstrated clinical expertise in client-centred consultancy with the ability to work independently.
