What you'll be doing
ISLHD is responsible for the provision of public healthcare services to the population residing from Helensburgh to North Durras. The diverse workforce provides healthcare services in a variety of settings including 7 hospital sites providing all inpatient and outpatient services. 
The position of Nurse Manager (NM), Illawarra and Shoalhaven Local Health District (ISLHD) Infection Management and Control Service (IMACS) reports to the ISLHD Executive Director of Nursing and Midwifery and Clinical Governance (EDNM&CG). The NM IMACS works closely with Illawarra Hospital Group (IHG), Shoalhaven Hospital Group (SHG) and all Directors of Nursing and Midwifery services as well as General Managers.
 
The NM IMACS is responsible for the recruitment, appointment, welfare and performance management of the IMACS unit's clinical nurse consultants and administration officers, and management of the allocated budget.
 
The NM IMACS will identify and optimise opportunities for staff development, both for IMACS team members and associated colleagues and actively seek opportunities for raising the profile of infection prevention and control programmes amongst clinical and non-clinical colleagues. 


The NM IMACS is responsible for ensuring that IMACS provides services that meet the needs of all ISLHD facilities and clinical streams. This role is the senior position within ISLHD IMACS and is responsible for setting standards and influencing infection prevention and control practice across the LHD. The position provides strategic direction, leadership and specialist advice regarding the prevention and control of infection across the LHD. The scope of influence of the position encompasses all clinical and non-clinical staff across the District. The Nurse Manager is also required to contribute to the day to day infection prevention and control activities of the IMACS team.


The position is responsible for ensuring the timely provision of information and data to a variety of internal and external agencies including the district operational managers and executive teams, the Ministry of Health, the ACHS and Health Round Table. The NM IMACS will ensure that IMACS contributes fully to national and local initiatives and programmes as required.


As a highly experienced infection prevention and control practitioner, the NM IMACS provides specialist input into infection prevention and control policy and practice, practice development, change management, and outbreak management within the ISLHD. Specialist clinical support and consultancy is available to the Nurse Manager, ISLHD IMACS through referral to ID physicians and clinical microbiologists and there is an expectation that collaboration with this expertise will be recognised and sought as necessary.

All NSW Health workers are required to have completed an up-to-date course of a COVID-19 vaccine (2 doses) which has been approved or recognised by the Therapeutics Goods Administration (TGA). New applicants must have completed the vaccination course prior to commencement with NSW Health, or provide an approved medical contraindication certificate certifying the worker cannot have any approved COVID-19 vaccines available in NSW.

Selection Criteria

  1. Current registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) as a Registered Nurse Division 1 with evidence of active involvement in relevant professional bodies.
  2. Post registration qualification in infection prevention and control supported by a minimum of five years full time experience in the field.
  3. Appropriate tertiary management qualification, or working towards the same, and demonstrated management experience in an infection control service or other clinical support unit.
  4. Strong leadership skills and a demonstrated ability to motivate and direct the activities of others in contemporary clinical practice incorporating the application of quality improvement and risk management principles, and change management processes.
  5. Ability to develop a strategic plan for the ISLHD IMACS and to implement, manage and evaluate progress making operational adjustments as necessary.
  6. Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Commonwealth and State health regulations and policies related to infection control, and of the various healthcare accreditation processes in place.
  7. Demonstrated high level written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to use technology to source information and to manipulate it using recognised computer applications.
