Sydney Local Health District is seeking highly motivated ENT Unaccredited Trainees to kick start their surgical career with the Teams at Concord and Canterbury Hospitals
What you will be doing:
This position is open to qualified candidates who have general surgery, neurosurgery, plastics or cardiothoracic surgery experience with a particular interest in ENT Surgery. You will be involved in the care and management of ENT surgery inpatients as well as attend ENT surgery outpatient clinics. This is a great opportunity for you to gain clinical competence in many aspects of ENT surgery. There will be opportunities for more experienced trainees to learn and perform more advanced ENT surgical techniques in a well supervised and supportive environment.
There will also be the opportunity to enhance your research skills, undertake peer review and audit projects and deliver research presentations.
This role is an ideal stepping stone to work towards acceptance into a recognised surgical training program and for those interested in OHNS as a career.
The Department of ENT Surgery
Concord Hospital department of Otorhinolaryngology (Ear Nose and Throat surgery) is a dynamic unit offering general ear nose and throat services to the local community as well as a comprehensive tertiary referral service for advanced Rhinology (sinus and nose disorders). We currently perform the largest number of rhinology cases in NSW with 4 dedicated Rhinologists with subspecialty interests in Allergy, Anterior Skull-base Surgery, Advanced sinus surgery and functional rhinoplasty.
Concord ENT is also staffed by 2 Head and Neck Surgeons with joint appointments at RPA Head and Neck Cancer Centre.
The ENT department at Canterbury Hospital is staffed by six highly skilled surgeons with a variety of general and sub-specialty interests. Canterbury Hospital uniquely offers Paediatric ENT experience.
The unaccredited trainee will work under supervision and assist with a wide range of both adult and paediatric ENT cases. In addition, the Unaccredited Trainee will contribute to the General Surgery on call roster.

Concord Repatriation General Hospital is a principal referral facility and a teaching hospital of the University of Sydney. We offer a comprehensive range of specialty and sub-specialty services, many recognised nationally and internationally as Centre’s of excellence. Major services include colorectal and laparoscopic surgery, gastroenterology, geriatrics and rehabilitation medicine, bone and joint services, cancer services, haematology, respiratory medicine and sleep studies, molecular biology and genetics, and those provided through the internationally acknowledged Statewide Burns Service, in which Concord plays a major part. Concord Hospital maintains string links to the veteran community. The Concord Institute of Academic Surgery provides support for surgical research and education.
Canterbury Hospital is a 215-bed metropolitan acute general hospital, providing services in Emergency Medicine, General Surgery and Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Paediatrics, Aged Care, Rehabilitation and Palliative Care. Canterbury Hospital caters for a local population of 220,000 people. The Canterbury area is home to a culturally and linguistically diverse community. Just under half (48%) of Canterbury residents were born overseas and just under half (47%) reported Chinese, Lebanese or Greek ancestry. Many residents of the Canterbury community have arrived in Australia relatively recently. Just fewer than 67% of Canterbury residents do not speak English at home which is almost three times higher than the NSW average (22%). The predominant languages spoken are Arabic, Greek, Mandarin, Bengali, Cantonese, Vietnamese, Urdu, Italian, Indonesian, Korean and Nepali. On average, around one third (33%) of Mandarin, Korean, Cantonese and Vietnamese speakers do not speak English well or at all. The majority of humanitarian arrivals that have settled in Sydney Local Health District, have done so in the Canterbury area. Most arrived from Afghanistan, although a significant number of Burmese and Rohingyan refugees have also settled in the area. Humanitarian arrivals often have complex health problems related to either their prior limited access to healthcare and/or their individual experiences of persecution or trauma. Aboriginal people make up 1.1% of the district’s population, compared with 2.9% of the state’s population.

- Completion of three post graduate years experience in public hospital service and a dedicated commitment to surgical training
- Demonstrated commitment to working towards advanced training in Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Demonstrated high level communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Ability to prioritise, organize and problem solve and meet multiple demands.
- Demonstrated interest in teaching and research in OHNS surgery.
