Westmead Hospital is a key facility of one of Australia’s largest major health and medical research precincts and is the principal referral hospital for Western Sydney Local Health District providing district level health services to Parramatta, Holroyd and The Hills Shire LGAs including tertiary and quaternary services to greater Western Sydney, greater metropolitan Sydney, rural NSW and other states. The Westmead Health Precinct currently under development is envisaged to be the largest hospital building project undertaken in Western Sydney and will transform the iconic but ageing Westmead Hospital into an innovative, contemporary, and integrated centre that will continue to deliver high quality healthcare and expand the education, health, and research capability of the area.
Westmead Hospital is a leading centre of research, training and specialisation in all fields of Medicine and Dentistry, providing services in Cardiology, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Neurology, Neurosurgery, Kidney and Pancreas transplantation, Cancer Care, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Neonatal Intensive Care, Trauma, Bone Marrow Transplantation, Critical Care, Aged Care and Rehabilitation, Adult Acute Psychiatry (networked with the co-located Cumberland Hospital) as well as other specialised medical and surgical services.
Westmead Hospital is also the principal referral centre for other metropolitan hospitals within the district including Auburn Hospital, Blacktown and Mount Druitt Hospital.
Intensive care service in Westmead hospital includes 36 general, and 10 post cardiothoracic surgical ICU beds. General ICU bed numbers have expanded by 50% in early 2020. Cardiothoracic ICU has also recently moved into a newly built ICU pod. Common ICU admissions include complex medical cases such as sepsis, severe respiratory or cardiac failure, complicated bone marrow transplant, and surgical cases including trauma, neurosurgery, vascular, cardiothoracic, ENT, plastic surgery, urology, upper GI, hepatobiliary, and colorectal procedures.
What you'll be doing
A 12-month position intended for surgical trainees interested in ENT. This position is unaccredited for otolaryngology training purposes. The position is based at Westmead Hospital and includes duties performed at Auburn Hospital and Westmead Private Hospital.
The primary purpose of the role is to provide effective clinical management of surgical patients in ENT, under appropriate supervision, whilst developing expertise in medical practice, in a complex clinical environment. The unaccredited trainee is the key person who works closely with all members of a multi-disciplinary team and deals with matters of an urgent or sensitive nature, whilst exercising discretion, sensitivity and maintaining confidentiality.
Working with staff of the ENT service of the Western Sydney Local Health District the Trainee supports the provision of optimal care to patients of the Western Sydney Local Health District. Decision making and supervision will be at the appropriate level according to the unaccredited trainee's skills, knowledge and experience. They will be expected to adopt a progressively more independent approach to patient management according to their experience, under the guidance of and at the discretion of the appropriate Attending Medical Officer (AMO). All patients managed within the hospitals of the health service are under the direct care of a specialist medical practitioner. All decisions regarding a patient's care are to be clearly communicated with the specialist responsible for that care.
- MBBS or equivalent, currently registered with the Medical Board of Australia.
- At least 3 post graduate years’ experience.
- Demonstrated experience in ENT (Minimum of one full term (10 weeks minimum) as an ENT RMO in an Australian Hospital).
- Minimum six (6) months surgical experience (Dedicated surgical terms).
- Progress in completing relevant courses eg: EMST, CCrISP, CLEAR
- Demonstrated Interest in Research and publication (Evidence of publication or work towards publication, enrolment or interest in higher degree).
- Excellent communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work within a multidisciplinary setting.
