The General Surgery Surgical Skills Unaccredited Trainee role will be based at Prince of Wales Hospital and its affiliated training rotations. There will 8 available positions with Prince of Wales Hospital.
The affiliated General Surgery Unaccredited Trainee training rotations at Prince of Wales are as follows:
- General Surgery Nights/Relief, POWH (in Prince of Wales Network hospitals and SET trainee relief as required in the POWH/Bankstown General Surgery SET Network)
- Cardiothoracic Surgery, POWH
- General Surgery, Dubbo Base Hospital
- General Surgery, Griffith Base Hospital
- General Surgery, Bega - South East Regional Hospital
Prince of Wales Hospital is a 440 bed tertiary referral centre affiliated with the University of NSW. It is situated on Randwick Campus with Sydney Children's Hospital, the Royal Hospital for Women and the Prince of Wales Private Hospital. The hospital has one of NSW's two spinal units and the only public hyperbaric unit. A range of services included aged and community health, anaesthesia, intensive care, emergency medicine, medical imaging, medicine, mental health, spinal medicine and surgery is provided to the community and to patients throughout NSW.
Griffith Base Hospital is a 90-bed facility with 2 well-equipped operating theatres. There is general surgical, general medical, paediatric and obstetric emphasis. The hospital is also serviced with a 24hr Emergency Department, ICU/CCU and an extensive Outpatient Clinic, and a rehabilitation and pain service. Diagnostic and support services within the hospital include Radiology (public and private), Pathology, Pharmacy, Physiotherapy and Blood Bank. The hospital performs approximately 3,000 operations per annum. Trainees who undertake the General Surgery rotation at Griffith Base Hospital enjoy time in theatre with exposure to a large amount of laparoscopic work.
South East Regional Hospital Bega services the area from Mallacoota to Batemans Bay. Emergency department bays, medical and surgical inpatient beds, a maternity unit, a paediatric unit, a critical care unit, operating theatres including day surgery, renal dialysis chairs, oncology area, Hospital in the Home and separate mental health unit are the services provided. A sub-acute rehabilitation unit recently opened.
Dubbo Base Hospital is a major rural referral facility situated on the edge of the western plains of outback Australia. It is a rapidly growing hospital which is part of Dubbo Health Service providing critical care, specialist medical inpatient and outpatient services, surgery, mental health and many specialised allied health and medical outreach services to a catchment population of approximately 150,000 people. Dubbo Health Service is in the Western NSW Local Health District.

Decision making and supervision will be at the appropriate level according to the doctor’s skills, knowledge and experience. The unaccredited trainee will be expected to adopt a progressively more independent approach to patient management according to their experience, under the guidance of and at the discretion of the appropriate Attending Medical Officer (AMO). All patients managed within the hospitals of the health service are under the direct care of a specialist medical practitioner. All decisions regarding their care are to be clearly communicated with the specialist responsible for that care.

- MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia.
- A minimum of 3 years of postgraduate experience and previous experience in a surgical department relevant to the position or specialty interest, including sufficient clinical experience in order to undertake the key accountabilities for this role.
- Commitment to relevant SET training program: either completed or on track to complete the requirements for admission to SET training. This includes the completion of desired courses, exams and terms.
- Demonstrated ability to complete rotations as allocated and required in the Eastern and Greater Southern Surgical Skills Network.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently within a supervised complex clinical environment utilising excellent clinical skills, judgement and expertise, including demonstrated excellent verbal, written and interpersonal skills, with the capacity to vary communication style.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within multi-disciplinary teams, including the sharing of appropriate information internally and externally with key persons or services.
- Demonstrated ability to prioritise workloads and display a flexible approach to meet changing situations in a demanding and unpredictable clinical environment.
- Demonstrated ongoing commitment to further self-education, professional development and to quality improvement, patient safety and risk management.
