The Children’s Hospital at Westmead (CHW) is a tertiary children's hospital, part of The Sydney Children's Hospitals Network. The Emergency Department at CHW sees over 60,000 presentations per year. CHW is a level-one trauma centre, state burns centre and manages critically ill children. The Emergency Department has a high patient acuity and approximately one quarter of the children presenting require hospital admission for further management. CHW is affiliated with the University of Sydney.

The Paediatric Emergency Trainee position is available for the 2026 Clinical Year, from 02 February 2026 to 31 January 2027. This Trainee position is either in a full-time or half-time (2 shifts per week) capacity. The shifts rotate between days, evenings and nights. The patients include those who need resuscitation and acute need for care and those with lower acuity. The trainee is part of the multidisciplinary Emergency Department team involving staff from all health professions, clerical and support staff. The position is always under the supervision of a nominated senior medical position either on site or contactable.

For Trainees with suitable experience, rotation may be available to the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) or to NETS (Newborn and Paediatric Emergency Transport Service) for a six month rotation. The Intensive Care Unit sees a wide variety of cases needing acute care including burns, post-operative cardiac surgery and severe infection. NETS transport critically ill children and neonates from peripheral hospitals to a paediatric emergency department or intensive care. Trainees manage high acuity patients in the challenging environment of retrieval.
