Apply now for an accredited Trainee in Rehabilitation Medicine position at Ballina District Hospital commencing in the 2025 clinical year for 6 months

The successful applicant will gain valuable experience to become competent in the assessment and initial management of patients with complex and interacting physical, cognitive, emotional and social problems. Coordinating the admission, assessment, management and discharge planning of Rehabilitation patients seen and admitted to Ballina District Hospital under their team.  



Where you'll be working

The Ballina Inpatient Rehabilitation and Transitional Care Unit is a 37-bed Unit providing an intensive interdisciplinary program to enable early transfer of care from an acute facility.

The Richmond Network consists of Lismore Base Hospital, Ballina District Hospital and Casino & District Memorial Hospital, with several Multi-Purpose sites also included. 

Ballina Hospital is a local community, level 3 rural hospital providing essential care to thousands of patients every year. Services provided include Emergency, General Medicine, Aged Care & Rehabilitation and Surgery. The hospital undertakes over 860 surgical procedures and sees over 18,900 Emergency Department presentations annually. Ballina District Hospital is situated in the heart of Ballina, an idyllic coastal playground for lovers of water sports, outdoor adventuring, and a relaxed lifestyle.

Lismore, Ballina and Casino Hospitals are affiliated teaching hospitals for medical students from the University of Newcastle, University of Sydney, University of Wollongong, University of Western Sydney and Bond University.

What you'll be doing
The primary purpose of a Trainee in Rehabilitation Medicine is to provide safe and high quality assessment, care and management, under supervision, of Rehabilitation service patients. The trainee needs to be aware of their limitations and work in a collegiate and collaborate manner.
 
Decision making and supervision will be at the appropriate level according to the trainee’s skills, knowledge and experience. The medical officer will be expected to adopt a progressively more independent approach to patient management according to their experience and progression thought he training program, under the guidance of and at the discretion of the appropriate Attending Medical Officer (AMO).  All patients managed within the hospitals of the health service are under the direct care of a specialist medical practitioner. All decisions regarding their care are to be clearly communicated with the specialist responsible for that care.
 
The position supports meeting the requirements for Australasian Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine (AFRM) training with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP).

  2. Proven ability to work independently within a supervised complex clinical environment utilising excellent clinical skills, judgment and expertise.
  3. Adept ability to work collaboratively within multi-disciplinary teams, including the sharing of appropriate information internally and externally with key persons or services.
  4. Proven verbal, written and interpersonal skills, with the capacity to vary communication style in line with the understanding of the needs of diverse audiences
  5. Sound ability to prioritise workloads and display a flexible approach to meet changing situations in a demanding and unpredictable clinical environment.
  6. Demonstrated commitment to quality improvement, patient safety and risk management.
  7. Commitment to participating in training and development opportunities to further develop skills and knowledge in the area of Rehabilitation Medicine.
