The Department of Molecular Imaging

The Department of Molecular Imaging at RPA, in which the successful applicant will work, is one of the most experienced and advanced Units in the country. In 1992, the Department at RPA was the 1st PET Department established in Australia. Since that time the Department has performed in excess of 130,000 PET and PET-CT scans (with the 100,000th patient scan milestone occurring in 2020), which is one of the largest experiences in the country. In PET, there are 2 scanners – the Biograph ‘Quadra’ and Biograph ‘Vision 600’ PET-CT scanners. The scanners are most advanced in the country – the Quadra (first full body PET-CT scanner), installed in 2021 was the 2nd such device installed in the world and the 1st in Australia; the Vision 600, installed in late 2019 was the 1st in the southern hemisphere. The Vision is validated for National and International clinical trials, where the Department has also provided services as a ‘Core’ Imaging Lab. In general, nuclear medicine, there are 3 scanners – including one SPECT-CT scanner. In 2002, the Department also installed the 1st hospital-owned and operated medical cyclotron and associated Radiochemistry facilities, which have been in continuous operation since then. In January 2014, RPA became the 1st public hospital facility in the country to receive a GMP Manufacturing Licence for PET tracers from the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA). The cyclotron has been enhanced so it operates at very high beam currents and produces improved isotope yields - it produces PET isotopes for clinical and research needs at RPA as well as supplying FDG and PET tracers to other hospitals.
