About the Opportunity
The Health Promotion Team at South Western Sydney Local Health District is looking for a flexible, adaptable and energetic Aboriginal Health Education Officer to join their team.

We are looking for someone who is engaging, driven and has an outgoing personality. We are seeking someone with fresh ideas and who can build strong working relationships and partnerships with a range of Aboriginal organisations, community members and internal health partners. The role will require you to run community interventions and engagement programs around various areas such as diabetes, where you will be ensuring best practice interventions are implemented. You will have access to ongoing cultural support and supervision through the Health Promotion Service and through the Aboriginal Health Unit. Joining SWSLHD will also mean that you will have lots of support and opportunities, including access to our Aboriginal Staff Network and attending relevant gatherings and Aboriginal cultural community events.

 

What You'll be Doing
The Aboriginal Health Promotion Officer will primarily work with the Close the Gap stream to develop and implement evidence-based and/or innovative policy and programs designed to increase Aboriginal health and wellbeing. Key focus areas will be:
a)      Promote healthy weight in the Aboriginal population
b)      Reduce smoking related harm in Aboriginal communities
c)      Strengthen protective factors for mental health in Aboriginal communities
d)      Reduce injury in Aboriginal communities


The Aboriginal Health Promotion Officer will primarily work with the Aboriginal Programs team to

  • deliver all stages of planning, implementation, evaluation, reporting and sustainability of culturally responsive programs to improve health outcomes and address healthy inequities and strength-based approaches for Aboriginal communities in south western Sydney.
  • key focus areas include but are not limited to promoting healthy weight, reducing smoking and vaping related harm, reducing rates of preventable chronic disease and strengthening protective factors for mental health in Aboriginal communities.

  1. This is an Identified Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander Position. Applicants for this position must be of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent through parentage, identify as an Aboriginal person and/or Torres Strait Islander and be accepted in the community as such. Exemption is claimed under Section 14 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977 (NSW).
  2. Tertiary qualifications in social science, health or related field, or equivalent experience.
  3. Demonstrated experience and knowledge in planning, implementing and evaluating health promotion initiatives (particularly relating to Aboriginal health issues)
  4. Experience working in community-based settings with Aboriginal communities.
  5. Understanding of evidence-based health promotion.
  6. Demonstrated ability to work in partnership with other staff and government, non-government and community organisations.
  7. Effective organisational skills and ability to work with minimal supervision.
  8. Demonstrated high-level oral, written and computer skills.
  9. Must possess a valid Australian Drivers Licence (excluding learner driver's licences). If not already in possession, a NSW Drivers Licence must be obtained within 3 months of appointment.
