What you'll be doing

The Aboriginal Health Worker Transition to Practice is a member of the Illawarra Shoalhaven Drug and Alcohol Service. The primary purpose of the position is to liaise and work with the Aboriginal community and Aboriginal specific service providers in the area to provide flexible, holistic and culturally sensitive drug and alcohol services. These include direct clinical care, to Aboriginal and or Torres Strait Islander people and communities to achieve better health access and outcomes. This work would be carried out whilst working towards meeting requirements for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) as an Aboriginal Health Practitioner. The Aboriginal Health Worker is responsible for ensuring that culturally appropriate treatment and community prevention strategies are conducted in consultation with staff and consumers of the service.
An Aboriginal Health Practitioner holds a Certificate IV in Aboriginal Primary Health Care (Practice), and is registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency.
An Aboriginal Health Worker holds or aspires to hold a minimum Certificate III qualification in Aboriginal Primary Health Care or a minimum Certificate III health qualification in the area of care in which the Aboriginal Health Worker works.

This position is open to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants only in accordance with Clause 26 of the Government Sector Employment Rules 2014, applicants must demonstrate Aboriginality in addition to addressing the selection criterion. 

 
All NSW Health workers are required to have completed an up-to-date course of a COVID-19 vaccine (2 doses) which has been approved or recognised by the Therapeutics Goods Administration (TGA). New applicants must have completed the vaccination course prior to commencement with NSW Health, or provide an approved medical contraindication certificate certifying the worker cannot have any approved COVID-19 vaccines available in NSW.

 

Acceptable proof of vaccination is the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR) Immunisation History Statement or AIR COVID-19 Digital Certificate. Please provide proof of vaccination if available.

Selection Criteria 

  1. Must be of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent (NB applicant’s race is a genuine occupational qualification and is authorised by Section 14 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977, NSW).
  2. Hold or be willing to work towards a minimum Certificate IV in Aboriginal Primary Health Care (Practice), and be willing to work towards Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) standards to meet Registration as an Aboriginal Health Practitioner.
  3. Demonstrated ability to successfully plan, develop, deliver or lead, evaluate and report on health promotion and education programs within allocated timeframes and resources.
  4. Demonstrated ability to engage and work autonomously to effectively prioritise workloads under limited supervision within a multidisciplinary team.
  5. Demonstrated skills in client assessment, support, referral and advocacy in drug and alcohol or related field and a commitment to quality improvement with the ability to develop resources for the delivery of culturally appropriate programs.
  6. Well-developed verbal communication skills with an ability to work effectively with a range of health professionals/ service providers/agencies to ensure coordination of care and appropriate allied health and social services referrals for Aboriginal people.
  7. Demonstrated computer skills with an ability to maintain accurate records in appropriate clinical and non-clinical information systems, collate data in spreadsheets, maintain diaries/calendars, as well as produce routine electronic written correspondence, project plans or educational materials and program evaluation reports.
  8. Current drivers licence Class C and ability and willingness to travel within the LHD for work purposes.
