The Anaesthesia Department at John Hunter Hospital is a vital component of one of Australia’s largest and most advanced tertiary referral centres.
In this role, you’ll provide high-quality anaesthetic and perioperative medical services to the patients of Hunter New England Local Health District. You’ll also play a key part in the operational management of anaesthetic and perioperative services while engaging in clinical practice, teaching, training, and research within the Greater Newcastle Sector Anaesthetic Service.
Key Responsibilities
- Delivering specialist perioperative and anaesthetic care, including on-call services.
- Supervising, training, and assessing junior medical staff.
- Contributing to the leadership and organisation of perioperative services.
Essential Requirements
- A primary medical degree registered with AHPRA.
- Fellowship of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA).
- Recent and comprehensive experience in anaesthesia and perioperative medicine.

- High-risk perioperative medicine - Caters to elective, urgent, and emergency cases, reflecting the hospital's status as a tertiary referral and trauma centre.

Teaching and Training Excellence:
- Plays a pivotal role in training anaesthetic trainees through the ANZCA program.

- Supports continued professional development with regular academic meetings, workshops, and simulation training.
- The department has access to the HNELHD Simulation Centre, a cutting-edge facility offering realistic clinical simulations to enhance skill development, teamwork, and critical decision-making in high-pressure scenarios.
Research and Innovation:
- Contributes to clinical research in anaesthesia, pain management, and perioperative medicine.
- Engages in collaborative studies to advance the field and improve patient outcomes.
Multidisciplinary Collaboration:
- Works closely with the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and Emergency Department (ED) to provide seamless perioperative care.
- Integral to the hospital’s trauma response team and critical care services.
Team Dynamics:
- The department comprises skilled and dedicated specialists, registrars, and junior medical staff who work collaboratively to ensure optimal patient outcomes.
