Staff Specialist in Retrieval Medicine
Hunter Retrieval Service, Newcastle NSW

  • 0.25 FTE position available for a new Staff Specialist, or
  • 0.125 FTE positions (x2) available for existing HRS Staff Specialists seeking to increase their current fractional appointment.

An eligibility list will be created for both options.

Applications are invited from suitably qualified consultants for the position of Staff Specialist in Retrieval Medicine with the Hunter Retrieval Service (HRS).

Applicants must hold a primary medical degree registrable with AHPRA, and possess Fellowship with one of the following: FACEM, FCICM, or FANZCA.

The Hunter Retrieval Service (HRS) is a busy, regional pre-hospital and retrieval medical service delivering 24/7 critical care advice, treatment and transport for critically ill and injured adult and paediatric patients across the Hunter New England, Mid-North Coast, and surrounding regions.

Operating from John Hunter Hospital and the Newcastle helicopter base, our doctor/nurse and doctor/paramedic teams complete over 1,100 missions annually by road, helicopter, and occasionally fixed-wing aircraft.

This is a highly collaborative, dynamic and rewarding role. Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team are essential for success.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide high-level clinical advice, care and supervision during pre-hospital and inter-hospital retrievals, as rostered, using appropriate transport platforms, including via telehealth.
  • Liaise with services within and outside of Hunter New England Local Health District (HNELHD) to ensure coordinated retrieval care, including providing clinical and logistical support to remote clinicians by phone and/or telehealth.
  • Promote and uphold safe work practices in line with current legislation and regulatory requirements, including those of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA).
  • Support the delivery of a safe, reliable retrieval service in collaboration with the NSW Aeromedical Control Centre (ACC).
  • Applicants must meet physical requirements for helicopter operations: a maximum weight of 105kg in flight suit and boots at the commencement and for the duration of the appointment.
  • May be required to drive a Retrieval vehicle if assessed as suitable and required.
