An exciting opportunity to work with the Hunter New England Mental Health Service has emerged!
These permanent full time Staff Specialist positions have the flexibility and variety of working across our Greater Newcastle Metropolitan Mental Health Services, which include Newcastle, Mater and Lake Macquarie Mental Health Services.

Our Greater Newcastle Metropolitan Mental Health Services at Hunter New England Local Health District provides care and treatment to consumers and their families who reside in the Newcastle and Lake Macquarie Communities. 

The adult mental health inpatient services are delivered at Mater Mental Health Centre, Waratah and community mental health services operate from multiple sites including Newcastle and Charlestown.  
The services have well established dedicated and experienced multi-disciplinary teams which include consultants, registrars, career medical officers, prevocational doctors, medical students, nurses, social workers, occupational therapists, psychologists, allied health professionals and administration staff. Consultants are expected to support peer colleagues providing cross cover when required across the Greater Newcastle and Lake Macquarie Metropolitan area.

Applicants Must Have:
Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists and Specialist Registration with AHPRA.
Candidates within 6 months of achieving fellowship are welcome to apply.

All NSW Health workers are required to have completed a primary course of a COVID-19 vaccine which has been approved or recognised by the Therapeutics Goods Administration (TGA). Additionally, Category A workers are required to receive a booster dose three months after completing the primary course of COVID-19 vaccinations. New applicants must have completed the vaccination course prior to commencement with NSW Health or provide an approved medical contraindication certificate (IM011 immunisation medical exemption form) certifying the worker cannot have any approved COVID-19 vaccines available in NSW.  Acceptable proof of vaccination is the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR) Immunisation History Statement or AIR COVID-19 Digital Certificate. Booster doses are highly recommended for all health care workers who have completed the primary course of COVID-19 vaccinations.

  1. A primary medical degree registrable with AHPRA and Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists, and/or overseas trained specialist pathways. Candidates within 6 months of achieving fellowship are eligible to apply.
  2. Evidence of being a medical expert, demonstrated by recent and comprehensive experience in Psychiatry.
  3. Evidence of being a scholar, maintains medical professional development and has the ability to assist other staff, including trainees in the acquisition and development of knowledge.
  4. Evidence of being a skilled communicator, including both oral and written skills, communicating with patients, students, other health professionals and the public.
  5. Evidence of being a collaborator, including the ability to network and operate within an interdisciplinary framework and to work with other stakeholders in a variety of settings.
  6. Evidence of being a manager, including ability to be flexible and cope with a changing health system, past leadership and management experience and previous safety and quality improvement activities.
  7. Evidence of being a professional, including continued professional development, peer review and other forms of clinical governance.
  8. Evidence of being an advocate, including contributions to improving individual and societal health.
