We have several exciting opportunities for Anaesthetists seeking full-time or part-time roles at John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle.

As part of a department with over 80 Staff Specialists and the largest training scheme in NSW, you'll have the chance to care for patients across all major subspecialties, including paediatrics. You'll enjoy a diverse caseload, working between John Hunter and Belmont Hospitals, and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams across varied clinical settings.

Additionally, you will have the opportunity to participate in our active and well-regarded regional and perioperative services, or our very busy acute pain service with a strong emphasis on interventional pain modalities.  


We have a solid framework to support clinical trials and health services research with emerging programs focused on evidence based multidisciplinary perioperative care and Human Factors. 

Applicants with a passion for education or systems improvement research will have the opportunity to work with the HNE Simulation Centre, one of the busiest and longest running centres in Australia.  

Newcastle is geographically blessed with stunning beaches, inland waterways, coastal walks, great sporting teams, a great sense of community spirit, and close proximity to both the Hunter Valley and Port Stephens.  We have everything except traffic!

Key Responsibilities

  • Delivering specialist perioperative and anaesthetic care, including on-call services.
  • Supervising, training, and assessing junior medical staff.
  • Contributing to the leadership and organisation of perioperative services.

Essential Requirements

  • A primary medical degree registered with AHPRA.
  • Fellowship of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA).
  • Recent and comprehensive experience in anaesthesia and perioperative medicine.

1. Comprehensive Services:

Provides anaesthetic care for a diverse range of specialties, including:

  • Cardiothoracic surgery
  • Neurosurgery
  • Paediatrics, including neonatal surgery
  • Obstetrics and gynaecology
  • Trauma care (as a major trauma referral centre)
  • General surgery and orthopaedics
  • High-risk perioperative medicine
  • Caters to elective, urgent, and emergency cases, reflecting the hospital's status as a tertiary referral and trauma centre.

2.State-of-the-Art Facilities:

  • Houses modern operating theatres equipped with advanced anaesthesia technology.
  • Dedicated spaces for specialised procedures, including interventional radiology and endoscopy.
  • Due for completion in 2026, The John Hunter Hospital Innovation Precinct is a hub for cutting-edge research, education, and collaboration, bringing together healthcare professionals, academics, and industry partners to drive advancements in patient care and medical innovation.

3.Teaching and Training Excellence:

  • Plays a pivotal role in training anaesthetic trainees through the ANZCA program.
  • Actively involved in mentoring medical students and junior doctors from the University of Newcastle and affiliated institutions.
  • Supports continued professional development with regular academic meetings, workshops, and simulation training.
  • Leads the HNE Simulation Centre, a cutting-edge facility offering realistic clinical simulations to enhance skill development, teamwork, and critical decision-making in high-pressure scenarios.

4.Research and Innovation:

  • Contributes to clinical and health services research in anaesthesia, pain management, and perioperative medicine.
  • Engages in collaborative studies to advance the field and improve patient outcomes.
  • Provides a supportive environment for new and emerging researchers. 

5.Multidisciplinary Collaboration:

  • Works closely with the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and Emergency Department (ED) to provide seamless perioperative care.
  • Integral to the hospital’s trauma response team and critical care services.

6.Team Dynamics:

  • The department comprises skilled and dedicated specialists, registrars, and junior medical staff who work collaboratively with highly trained anaesthetic nurses to ensure optimal patient outcomes.
