Where you'll be working:
The Sexual Health Service (AKA The Pacific Clinic) is located at the Community Health building at 670 Hunter Street Newcastle. It comes under the auspice of the Medical and Interventional Services based at John Hunter Hospital (JHH). It is a Multidisciplinary service (Medical, Nursing, Admin & Social Worker) providing care related to STIs and HIV, prioritising people from at risk groups such as people with symptoms of an STI or in contact with someone with a confirmed STI, gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men, trans and gender diverse adults, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, people who work in the sex industry, people who inject drugs. The service provides information and testing for STIs, HIV and Hepatitis B&C; counselling on STI and HIV related issues, contact tracing & support and referral for SHS clients who also have other social and emotional concerns. The service provides outreach clinics to Tamworth and Taree.

About the role:
The Social Worker with the service is the sole Social Worker for this Service but will link in with Immunology Social Worker at the JHH and Social workers based in NGOs such as ACON and Karumba.

The successful applicant should have a good understanding of and interest in Sexual Health related matters. An individualised professional development program will be worked out with the applicant depending on their identified needs. Support is available from the Social Workers in Medicine Team at the JHH, the Level 5 Team Leader, Level 7 Service Manager and the broader Social Work Department.

About you:
You will be an organised and flexible person able to use a variety of social work interventions to engage with a diverse and often marginalised range of clients. It is important that the Social Worker is able to demonstrate an open minded, non-judgemental approach with clients and is able to develop linkages with other community based organisations as this role does not provide long term case-management for clients who may have a number of concerns outside of their Sexual Health concerns.

Requirements:
  • Must hold as a minimum a bachelor degree or Qualifying Masters in social work which provides eligibility for membership of the Australian Association of Social Workers, or other qualification deemed equivalent by the employer.
  • Minimum of 3 years full time clinical experience
  • Eligibility to drive in NSW and willingness to travel for work related activities / meetings as required.
