This is a position identified for Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people on the basis of a genuine occupational qualification under section 14(d) of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977. Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander applicants must demonstrate Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander status in addition to addressing the selection criterion.

About the role:

This role is a key position in establishing trust and building relationships between the Newcastle Sexual Assault Service and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Clients, Families and Communities.

In this role you will work directly with Aboriginal families to help them to engage with services. It also works with services to develop the provision of culturally appropriate engagement. 

This position provides therapeutic and case management services to adult and child victims of sexual assault and their non-offending family members, including the provision of crisis counselling and support and facilitation of forensic/medical services as required. 


Where you’ll be working: 

  • The Newcastle Sexual Assault Service sits on the land of the Awabakal people and operates out of the Harker Building at the Wallsend Health Campus where this position is based.
  • The Service also operates a 24-hour crisis response from the John Hunter Hospital.

Requirements:

Our successful candidate will possess the following:

  • Must hold a degree in Social Work, Psychology, Clinical Psychology, or other qualification deemed equivalent by the employer, which provides eligibility or membership of the relevant professional association / full registration through the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency.
  • Must participate in the Sexual Assault on-call roster and provide consultation and/or supervision to other staff regarding sexual assault.
  • Must participate in regular clinical supervision.
  • Eligible to drive in NSW with a current unrestricted NSW Drivers Licence.

  • You will have experience working with Aboriginal families and communities who have experienced violence, abuse and neglect, including Child Protection.
  • You will have a good knowledge and understanding of intergenerational trauma.
  • You will be motivated and skilled in time management, prioritising competing commitments, and managing and responding to stressful situations.
  • You will be a team player and value working in collaboration with others.

  • An eligibility list will be created for future permanent full or part time and temporary full or part time vacancies.
  • This position is full time; however, part time/job share arrangements may also be considered.
