We are looking for high performing Senior Data Engineers to join the Data Engineering Team within the Cancer Services & Information Division of the Cancer Institute NSW. There are two temporary fixed term opportunities on offer to: 

• Be part of an organisation that makes a difference in cancer control in NSW 
• Be a main contributor to the Data Engineering program of work and ensure that the Institute has the data it requires to deliver its priorities in the NSW Cancer Plan
• Be part of a dynamic team of data engineers and analysts and work closely with epidemiologists, statisticians and data scientists to develop an efficient, automated flow of data and information fit for research purposes and reporting

What you’ll be doing

The Senior Data Engineer will work in a small team which is responsible for the development, implementation and maintenance of data products and pipeline architecture for the NSW Cancer Institute.

The role will be responsible for bringing together and handling data from a wide range of source databases and systems into a consolidated environment to drive the reporting and analytics functionality of the Institute.

Some interesting challenges in this role include:

• Facilitating the engagement and input of a wide range of stakeholders and end users within the organisation and across government with diverse interests and competing priorities
• Ensuring required level of flexibility, adaptability to respond to program demands with the ability to work independently and with minimal supervision
• Developing and maintaining a comprehensive knowledge of data sources as well as engineering and analytical tools

Remuneration/Benefits 

In addition to base salary:

• 11.5% superannuation
• 4 weeks annual leave (plus 17.5% leave loading)
• 10 days sick leave
• 40 hours per week which include accrual of monthly Allocated Day Off (ADO) x 12 per year.

Essential requirements

• Tertiary qualifications in health information management, statistics, data science, informatics or a related discipline, and/or demonstrated relevant equivalent professional experience and training.
• Strong working knowledge of analysis techniques and programming tools such as R, SQL, and Python in order to deliver data and analytical services including data ingestion, transformation, storage and reporting.
• Ability to identify, design, and implement internal process improvements including automating manual processes, optimising data delivery, re-designing infrastructure for greater scalability and loading of data from a wide variety of data sources.
• Experience in visualisation languages and tools such as R Shiny, PowerBI, Tableau, or similar programming applications.
• Agile project management, and demonstrated interest in current developments in the rapidly changing fields of data engineering and how it relates to data science and visualisation approaches.
• Demonstrated ability to engage and work collaboratively with key business stakeholders, including understanding and refining requirements and effective presentation of results to non-technical stakeholders.
• Possess excellent communication skills with experience in translating business needs into technical solutions, evidenced by presenting to large groups, senior management and executives and producing informative technical and non-technical documentation.
• Knowledge of health-related data collections and systems, the strengths and weaknesses of these datasets and a good understanding of the NSW and Australian Health Systems will be highly preferred.
