What you'll be doing
This position is appropriate for medical officers who are interested in training in intensive care medicine. Trainees will either be registered with, or in the process of applying to, the College of Intensive Care Medicine (CICM). The position is suitable for trainees at all stages of their training and based on clinical experience and level of training, the ICU will then determine the most appropriate clinical role to align with the units' operational requirements and trainees’ requirements. Trainees may be seconded to rotational positions in Anaesthesia, Medicine or Rural ICU according to their training requirements.
St George ICU is an award-winning state of the art Level 3 Intensive Care unit in a 700-bed tertiary referral and the major trauma centre for SESLHD. The unit treats over 3000 patients each year (including 500 post-op cardiothoracic patients) and has 52 physical beds. The unit offers exposure to a broad range of high acuity subspecialty intensive care, including trauma, cardiothoracic surgery, neurosurgery, complex abdominal surgery and ECMO. The department places an emphasis on welfare, diversity and a culture of inclusivity.
There is an ICU-based echocardiography service with an opportunity for hands-on training and supervision for those seeking formal qualification in echocardiography. There is also a fully equipped simulation centre in the Intensive Care complex where regular multidisciplinary simulation sessions are held.
Trainees in the specialty of Intensive Care may be seconded to rotational positions in Anaesthesia or Medicine, according to their training requirements.

- MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia in an appropriate registration category.
- Experience working in a Level 3 ICU at Resident Medical Officer Level grade or Anaesthetic experience at Resident Medical Officer level or above.
- Demonstrate competence in simple ICU procedures such as insertion of central venous catheters and peripheral arterial catheters.
- Demonstrate excellent clinical skills and judgement.
- Demonstrate commitment to relevant training program.
- Demonstrate teamwork, time management, and problem solving skills in the clinical setting and ability to work in a complex environment.
- Experience and willingness to teach junior medical staff.
- At least three years' post graduate experience in public hospital service (or equivalent)
