Junior Medical Officer


Nepean Hospital is a major referral and teaching hospital of the University of Sydney. Nepean Hospital is recognised as comprising one of the largest and busiest maternity care facilities in Western Sydney. The tertiary level public hospital provides care for approximately 4000 births per year, including high risk antenatal care, and services the state’s highest population of high-risk groups such as Aboriginal and Pacific Islander women.

As a JMO in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, you’ll be joining a tertiary level public hospital. We have dedicated teaching every week in general and high risk obstetrics, and our enthusiastic team will assist you with your application to the RANZCOG training program. With a massive redevelopment already underway, you’ll be joining us as our new 14 storey clinical tower is completed which includes a brand new birthing unit with 18 delivery rooms.

What you'll be doing

  • Developing competency in:
    • outpatient management of pregnant women.
    • effective assessment and investigative skills in women presenting with acute complications of pregnancy.
    • basic delivery suite and operative O&G skills.
    • effective gynaecological assessment and investigative skills in women presenting to outpatient and emergency departments with Gynaecological presentations.
  • Effectively assessment and investigative skills in women presenting with acute complications of pregnancy.
  • Coordinating the care of women admitted for gynaecological care within a team and under the supervision of Consultants.

Where you'll be working

  • Nepean Hospital is a major referral and teaching hospital of the University of Sydney and one of the largest and busiest maternity care facilities in Western Sydney.
  • We provide care for up to 4,000 births per year, including high-risk antenatal care
  • Our Obstetrics and Gynaecology unit has 48 beds: 24 antenatal and 24 post-natal beds and 9 birthing rooms. There are also a large number of gynaecology operating lists.
  • We service the state’s highest population of high-risk groups.
  • We’re proud of our teaching program for junior medical officers in our department with qualified consultants with training opportunities to support certificates and diplomas with RANZCOG.

Essential requirements
  • MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia in an appropriate registration category.
  • Expected completion of at least two postgraduate years at the time of commencement of employment, with prior experience in Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
  • Recent relevant clinical experience required to undertake the key accountabilities for this role.
  • Competency in:
    • Obstetric and Gynaecological history taking and examination.
    • Pelvic examination including speculum examination and PAP smears.
    • Basic understand of Obstetric antenatal care.
    • Basic competency in normal delivery and assessment of progress in labour.
    • Basic interpretation of CTGs.
    • Basic understanding of Obstetric and Gynaecological ultrasound reports.
  • This position is subject to an appropriate supervision level which can be supported by the health agency. If the incumbent’s registration conditions include supervision requirements, the level of supervision must be able to be supported by the health agency for this role.
  • Valid Working with Children Check, cleared National Police Check.
  • To be employed by NSW Health you are required to provide evidence of vaccination to comply with the NSW Health Occupational Assessment, Screening & Vaccination against Specified Infectious Diseases Policy, this includes any amendments made from time to time.

  1. Qualifications and experience commensurate with the Essential Requirements for the role.
  2. Advanced ability to work collaboratively within multi-disciplinary teams, including the sharing of appropriate information internally and externally with key persons or services.
  3. Advanced ability to work independently within a supervised complex clinical environment utilising excellent clinical skills, judgment and expertise.
  4. Advanced verbal, written and interpersonal skills, with the capacity to vary communication style in line with the understanding of the needs of diverse audiences.
  5. Advanced ability to prioritise workloads and display a flexible approach to meet changing situations in a demanding and unpredictable clinical environment.
  6. Commitment to participating in training and development opportunities to further develop skills and knowledge in the area of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
  7. Previous experience in and willingness to deliver undergraduate and postgraduate medical education and training.
