What you'll be doing
The Sydney South West Surgical Skills Training Network Surgical Senior Resident Medical Officer (SRMO) positions are designed to benefit JMOs who wish to pursue a career in surgery. SRMOs employed in these positions will provide effective surgical care to patients under supervision in complex clinical environments whilst facilitating preparation for a career in surgery. Surgical SRMOs are expected to be sufficiently skilled to be able to supervise more junior medical officers and at times be required to take on accredited surgical trainee responsibilities, including assessment of emergency surgical patients referred for consultation.
Responsibilities include:
Surgical SRMOs will rotate through four 3-month terms in which they will work with General Surgical, Sub-speciality Surgical and Critical Care teams within Sydney Southwest Surgical Skills Network that may include Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Concord Repatriation General Hospital, Westmead Children's Hospital and Alice Springs Hospital. The position also includes a network relief term in which cover is provided for SET trainees at other hospitals within the Central Network, including Chris O'Brien Lifehouse, Auburn, Blacktown, Orange and Dubbo Base Hospitals. The provision of clinical services includes terms in general surgery (Upper GI/HPB, colorectal, breast/endocrine, trauma), ICU, vascular surgery, urology, cardiothoracics, neurosurgery, plastic surgery and burns, Head and Neck and paediatric surgery.
Research is strongly encouraged, whilst teaching of undergraduate medical students, interns and nurses is expected.

Responsibilities include:
- Co-ordinating the admission, management and discharge planning of patients seen in or admitted to their Unit, and ensuring clear documentation in the medical record.
- The day-to-day assessment, decision-making and management of the patients in their Unit including effective clinical handover, communicating patients and their family the nature of their condition and its treatment.
- Communicating and coordinating care with their team, arranging consultation with other staff when appropriate.
- Participation in educational and career development opportunities offered, including attendance at formal teaching sessions.
- Participation in after-hours rostered overtime and on-call, including shift work as required.

- MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia in an appropriate registration category.
- Minimum 2 years postgraduate medical experience at the commencement of the post with recent demonstrated surgical experience appropriate to a doctor in the early part of their surgical career.
- Demonstrated commitment to pursuing a surgical career with a view to future training with RACS including completion of or preparation for the RACS Surgical Sciences Examination.
- Excellent verbal and written communication and computer skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently within a supervised complex clinical environment utilizing excellent clinical skills, judgement and expertise.
- Demonstrated effective teamwork, time management, problem solving skills as part of a multidisciplinary clinical care team, as well as evidence of advocacy for patients, colleagues and populations.
- Demonstrated knowledge of and application of key NSW Ministry of Health Policy Directives relevant to inpatient surgical care, and commitment to quality improvement, patient safety and risk management.
- Evidence of continued professional development appropriate to an early surgical career JMO, commitment to self-directed education and teaching.
