Network 14 encompasses 4 Local Government Areas as part of Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District. The purpose of the Resident Medical Officer position is to provide effective medical services to patients, while developing expertise and skills in medical practice, in a complex clinical environment in inpatients and outpatient areas.
What you'll be doing
- 5 Rotations across 4 sites.
- Nepean Hospital
- Blue Mountains District ANZAC Memorial Hospital
- Lithgow Hospital
- Hawkesbury Hospital
- Participating in 24/7 rotating roster of days, evenings, nights and weekends.
- Coordinating the admission, management and discharge planning of patients
- Undertaking initial assessment of the patient including patient history, physical examination, formulating a management plan and ordering appropriate investigations.
- Communicating and co-ordinating care with the team, arranging consultation with other staff when appropriate.
- Day to day management of patients, communicating with patients and their carers
- Arranging discharge and liaison with local medical officers and other community-based care providers
- Developing skills and gaining experience in MDTs and liaison with Allied Health.
- Have the opportunity to develop skills in teaching as all sites have medical students from various universities present.
Where you'll be working
- Nepean Hospital is located in Kingswood and is a 530 bed tertiary referral hospital, offering a wide variety of surgical, medical and critical care terms of residents. A substantial redevelopment program is underway with Stage One complete, and Stage Two begun. It is an exciting time to join as a junior medical officer with innovative and cutting-edge new models of care and services being established. There are opportunities for research; a number of departments have global reputations. It is a teaching hospital linked with the University of Sydney and hosts students from many different universities and disciplines. The hospital is a 45 minute drive from Sydney, and can be reached by train.
- Blue Mountains District ANZAC Memorial Hospital is located between Leura and Katoomba. It is an acute hospital with inpatient and outpatient services and an Emergency Department. Residents rotate through a General Medicine term.
- Hawkesbury District Hospital is a teaching hospital in Windsor, providing acute, community and allied health services for the local community and surrounding districts. Residents can join rotations in General Medicine, Emergency Medicine or General Surgery.
- Lithgow Hospital is located in the historic township of Lithgow, one hour drive west of Penrith. It is a 46 bed public hospital that provides healthcare services to a rapidly expanding population Residents rotate in General Medicine, in a rural context allowing insight and appreciation for smaller rural hospitals.

- MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia in an appropriate registration category.
- A minimum of 1 (one) full year of postgraduate experience.
- This position is subject to an appropriate supervision level which can be supported by the health agency. If the incumbent’s registration conditions include supervision requirements, the level of supervision must be able to be supported by the health agency for this role.
- Valid Working with Children Check.
- Cleared National Police Check.
- To be employed by NSW Health you are required to provide evidence of vaccination to comply with the NSW Health Occupational Assessment, Screening & Vaccination against Specified Infectious Diseases Policy, this includes any amendments made from time to time.
Selection criteria
- Qualifications and experience commensurate with the Essential Requirements for the role.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently within a supervised complex clinical environment utilising excellent clinical skills, judgment and expertise.
- Adept ability to work collaboratively within multi-disciplinary teams, including the sharing of appropriate information internally and externally with key persons or services.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills and ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with patients, family members and other members of the health care team.
- Good organisational and time management skills and ability to manage competing priorities in a complex environment.
- Demonstrated commitment to continuing professional development and self-education.
- Demonstrated commitment to quality improvement, patient safety and risk management.
