Where you'll be working

Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Hospital is a major metropolitan teaching hospital. Patients can access a range of services including coronary care, intensive care, orthopaedics, general medicine, surgical, obstetric, respiratory, rehabilitation, paediatric, maternity and emergency care. The hospital also provides a wide range of outpatient services including allied health, dental and podiatry clinics, child, adolescent and family health, drug and alcohol, health promotion and rehabilitation and aged care. An acute mental health service is co-located at Hornsby Hospital. The new $265 million Stage 2 redevelopment was officially opened in June 2022.

What you'll be doing
The Medical Assessment Unit’s General Advanced Medicine Trainee is expected to provide effective clinical management of patients under appropriate supervision, including patient assessment, making treatment decisions, performing procedures and maintaining adequate medical records; and to develop expertise in medical practice, quality assurance and medical education in a complex clinical environment.  This includes supervised general medical management of patients admitted to the specialty of General Medicine and the Medical Assessment Unit, providing consultation to other departments and managing outpatients as needed. The General Medicine Trainee is expected to adopt a progressively more independent approach to patient management according to their experience, under the guidance of, and at the discretion of the Attending AMO, as well as to participate on the After Hours and on-call medical roster.


Applicants in the following categories are eligible to apply: Advanced trainees wishing to complete General Medicine or Dual Training, basic physician trainees who have successfully completed the written component of the FRACP exam, and trainees who are eligible for top-up training in General Medicine following RACP assessment. The successful applicant will have a strong commitment to General Medicine, excellent written and oral communication skills, and actively engage in teaching and quality assurance activities
  1. Qualifications and experience commensurate with the Essential Requirements for the role
  2. Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team in the planning, delivery and coordination of patient care.
  3. High level communication skills, including the ability to convey, and adapt verbal and written information to a clinical and non-clinical audience.
  4. Demonstrated good organisational and time management skills and ability to manage competing priorities in a complex environment.
  5. Demonstrated high level independent clinical skills and judgement, with the ability to make sound decisions and problem solve with an awareness of limitations and ability to learn independently and modify behaviour accordingly
  6. Understanding and promotion of collaborative effort and empathy within a heterogeneous team environment such as the Medical Assessment Unit.
  7. Demonstrated commitment to General and Acute Care Medicine Advanced Training program including education, research and training.
